Think Dentures Are Just for Seniors? Let Me Change Your Mind.

Hi, I’m Jennifer Auld, denturist at Swiss Denture in Calgary.
And today, I want to talk about something I hear all the time:

“Aren’t dentures for old people only?”

It’s one of the most common—and outdated—assumptions I come across. And while it’s true that many of my wonderful patients are in their 60s, 70s, and beyond, I’m also seeing more and more people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s who need denture solutions, too.

The truth is, tooth loss doesn’t come with a set age.
It can happen gradually or suddenly. It can come from disease, trauma, or even just life getting in the way of regular dental care. And it can leave you feeling embarrassed, frustrated, and unsure what to do next—no matter how old you are.

So, Why Would Someone in Their 20s or 30s Need Dentures?

There are a number of reasons why someone in their early adulthood might find themselves needing partial or full dentures. Here are just a few of the more common causes I see in my practice:

  • Untreated gum disease that leads to bone loss and loose or missing teeth
  • Rampant decay, often from soda, sugar, or poor oral hygiene
  • Drug use—especially methamphetamine, which is infamous for destroying teeth quickly
  • Neglect, which can stem from trauma, poverty, or simply never having access to consistent dental care

No shame here.
Just real people with real stories who deserve to smile again.

Many of these patients come to me with hesitation. They’re embarrassed. They feel “too young” to even say the word dentures. But once we sit down and talk, they realize something important:

Dentures aren’t the end of the road—they’re a fresh start.

What Makes Dentures Different for Younger Patients?

For adults in their 20s and 30s, jaw growth is mostly complete. That’s good news—it means your foundation is ready for long-term denture solutions, including implant-retained options that are stable, discreet, and life-changing.

Younger patients tend to heal quickly, adapt well, and care for their dentures responsibly. In many cases, we can create custom dentures that look so natural, nobody knows you’re wearing them. You get your smile back—and your confidence, too.

It’s not about age.
It’s about getting your life back on track with a smile you feel good about.

A Note to My Older Patients: You’re Still in the Right Place

If you’re in your 60s, 70s, or 80s—please know this: nothing about this blog changes the fact that you are 100% welcome here.
You’ve always been the foundation of Swiss Denture, and that will never change.

This message is simply to let more people know—younger people, especially—that denture care is not just for one group. Whether you’ve had decades with your natural teeth or just a few hard years that led to tooth loss, you deserve solutions that work for you.
