Is Denture Pain Normal? Understanding and Alleviating Discomfort

Dentures are a common solution for individuals who have lost their natural teeth, allowing them to restore their smile and regain proper chewing and speaking function. However, some wearers may experience discomfort or pain while wearing dentures. Many people ask us why. In this blog, we will explore the reasons behind denture pain and provide guidance on how to address and alleviate such discomfort.

Why Denture Pain Occurs

Denture pain can arise due to various factors, including:

a) Adjusting to the prosthesis: When you first start wearing dentures, your oral tissues need time to adapt to the new appliance. The pressure and rubbing of the dentures against your gums and other oral structures may cause soreness or tenderness initially.

b) Poorly fitting dentures: Ill-fitting dentures can lead to persistent pain. Over time, changes in the shape of the jawbone and gum tissue can cause the dentures to become loose, leading to friction and sore spots. Poorly fitting dentures may also result in uneven pressure distribution, causing discomfort in specific areas.

c) Gum inflammation and infections:
If dentures are not cleaned properly, plaque and bacteria can accumulate on the gum tissues, leading to inflammation and potential infections. This can cause discomfort and pain in the mouth.

d) Oral sores or ulcers: Denture wearers may occasionally develop oral sores or ulcers, which can be caused by accidental biting, ill-fitting dentures, or other underlying oral health issues. These sores can cause localized pain and discomfort.

e) Bite misalignment: If the bite is not aligned properly, it can cause the dentures to move around and irritate the supporting tissues.

What To Do About Denture Pain?

If you experience denture pain, here are some steps you can take to alleviate the discomfort:

a) Consult your denturist: If you’re experiencing persistent or severe denture pain, it’s crucial to take action as soon as possible. Don’t keep walking around with denture pain! Waiting can only make things worse. Once you have made an appointment, your denturist will examine your oral tissues and dentures to identify any underlying issues that may be causing the pain. They can also make adjustments or recommend alternative treatment options to improve the fit and comfort of your dentures.

b) Practice good oral hygiene: Maintaining proper oral hygiene is vital for denture wearers. Remove your (removable) dentures daily and clean them thoroughly using a soft-bristled brush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner. Additionally, gently brush your gums, tongue, and any remaining natural teeth to prevent plaque buildup and gum inflammation.

c) Use over-the-counter pain relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help manage temporary discomfort caused by denture soreness. However, it’s important to follow the instructions and consult your medical doctor if you have any underlying medical conditions or take other medications.

d) Give your gums time to rest: If your gums are sore or irritated, it can be helpful to give them regular breaks from wearing dentures. This allows the oral tissues to recover and reduces the chances of developing further pain or complications. Consult with your denturist regarding the recommended duration for resting your gums.

Calgary denturist Jennifer Auld at Swiss Denture:
“Experiencing denture pain is not uncommon, especially during the initial adjustment period or due to ill-fitting dentures. By understanding the causes behind denture pain and following the appropriate measures, you can find relief and improve your overall denture-wearing experience.

The 3 Biggest Reasons Why People Look For Better Dentures

Denturist Jennifer Auld at Swiss Dentures Calgary:
“Dentures are a common solution for people who have lost some or all of their teeth, providing them with the ability to eat, speak and smile normally again. However, not all dentures are created equally! Many people who wear dentures may experience dissatisfaction with their current set due to issues such as discomfort, poor functionality, or aesthetics.

Are you one of those people? Do you feel self-conscious, frustrated, or even isolated from your friends and family because you are ashamed to smile? When you are in search of a better solution, we encourage you to explore all options to improve your dentures in Calgary and find better comfort, function, and natural-looking appearance.”

Most people look for better dentures when they have issues with

1. Denture Comfort

2. Denture Functionality

3. Denture Aesthetics

Dentures can have a significant impact on one’s appearance and self-confidence. Ill-fitting or poorly designed dentures may look unnatural or fake, making people feel self-conscious or embarrassed. A quality denture in Calgary should be designed to look and feel as natural as possible, blending in seamlessly with the rest of the mouth and providing a confident, attractive smile.

Denturist Jennifer Auld at Swiss Dentures Calgary:
“When any or all three of the above apply to you, you may be experiencing a range of emotions, from frustration to (sometimes) even anger. At Swiss Denture, our patient care goes beyond providing dentures. It’s our philosophy that dentures should truly REPLACE missing teeth. They shouldn’t be mediocre surrogates. In this blog post, we will provide you with some valuable tips and insights to help you find the dentures you want. Let’s get started.”

1. I’m disappointed with my current denture COMFORT

When people are disappointed with the comfort of their current dentures, they may be experiencing pain. Ill-fitting dentures can cause sore spots, irritation and (sometimes) severe pain, which can impact their entire life. We suggest taking action as soon as possible. Walking around in pain is not living at all. Pain will always affect your mood, social behaviour, and happiness!

Swiss Denture offers a range of solutions to comfort issues by providing custom-fit dentures that are designed specifically to fit each individual’s mouth. Swiss Denture Calgary uses advanced technologies to create dentures that are precise, comfortable and secure, with minimal movement or friction in the mouth.

All Swiss Dentures are made with high-quality materials that are durable, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. With Swiss Denture, people can say goodbye to the discomfort and frustration of ill-fitting dentures and enjoy the comfort and confidence of a perfectly-fitting, natural-looking set of teeth. Most importantly: With Swiss Dentures, you can live without mouth pain!

2. I’m disappointed with my current denture FUNCTIONALITY

The average denture may not function as well as natural teeth. When people are disappointed with the functionality of their current dentures, they often feel frustrated when eating or speaking. Ill-fitting or poorly designed dentures may not provide the necessary support and stability for normal chewing and speaking, and this leads to discomfort and embarrassment. This can impact your social life, leading to decreased confidence and a reluctance to participate in collective activities. Don’t let ill-fitting dentures take away the fun of life! It’s cliché, but life is really too short to be bothered by your dentures. You should be able to eat, speak, and smile freely.

Swiss Denture offers a solution to these issues by providing dentures that are designed to restore natural function as much as possible. Using advanced technology, Calgary-based Swiss Denture can create dentures that fit securely and comfortably, providing the necessary support and stability for normal eating and speaking. Wouldn’t you like to enjoy the comfort and confidence of a well-functioning set of teeth again?

3. I’m disappointed with my current denture AESTHETICS

Many people are disappointed with the aesthetics of their current dentures. More than often they feel flat-out embarrassed about their smile. Poorly designed dentures may not look natural, leading to an obvious and fake appearance that doesn’t match the person’s natural teeth or facial features. This can impact the person’s confidence and self-esteem, leading to a reluctance to smile.

Not smiling can have negative effects on your life, both physically and emotionally.

When you don’t smile, your body may not release mood-boosting chemicals such as endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine, which can contribute to feelings of sadness, anxiety, and stress.

In addition, not smiling can affect your social interactions, making it harder to connect with others. People who don’t smile may be perceived as unapproachable, unfriendly, or even untrustworthy, which can make it harder to build relationships with friends, family, and colleagues. Not smiling can also lead to feelings of isolation or loneliness.

Therefore: It’s really important to make an effort to smile more often and share your positive energy with those around you!

Swiss Denture offers a solution to solve aesthetic issues by providing dentures that are designed to look as natural as possible, blending in seamlessly with the rest of the mouth and facial features. Swiss Denture can create custom-fit dentures that match the person’s natural tooth colour, size, and shape to create a natural look. With Swiss Dentures, you will feel confident to smile again!

Not all dentures are created equally

Swiss Dentures – A High-Quality Denture Solution in Calgary

Losing one or more teeth can be a traumatic experience for many people. Not only does it impact your appearance, but it can also affect your ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently. If you are someone who has lost teeth due to aging, injury, decay, or periodontal disease, you may be considering dentures as a solution. But is this the right option for you? Let’s take a closer look at some of the factors you might consider.

What problems can dentures solve?

One of the primary problems that people who have lost teeth face is difficulty chewing. Depending on the location and number of missing teeth, chewing can become a painful or challenging experience. This can also lead to digestive problems and malnutrition over time.

Another common issue is difficulty speaking. The tongue and teeth work together to produce a range of sounds, and missing teeth can affect your ability to articulate words correctly. This can cause embarrassment and impact your social interactions.

Finally, losing teeth can also lead to a loss of self-confidence. People who have missing teeth often feel self-conscious about their appearance, and this can affect their interactions with others, both personally and professionally. Missing teeth can have a significant impact on your social life.

Questions you might have about dentures

If you are considering dentures as a solution, it is natural to have some questions, concerns, and/or doubts. For example, you may wonder what types of dentures are available and which one is right for you. There are several types of dentures, including partial dentures, complete dentures, and implant-supported dentures, and each has its own benefits and drawbacks.

You may also wonder about the cost of dentures and whether your insurance will cover them. Dentures can be expensive, and insurance coverage can vary widely depending on your plan.

Another concern may be how to take care of your dentures. Proper maintenance is critical to the longevity and effectiveness of your dentures. You will need to clean them regularly, soak them in a denture solution, and avoid certain foods and habits that can damage them.

Fears or concerns you might have around the denture process

It’s not uncommon for people who are considering dentures to have fears about the process and the outcome. For example, you may be worried about what people will say (social stigma) when they notice you’re wearing dentures. Some people feel embarrassed or ashamed about wearing dentures, and this can impact their overall quality of life.

Another fear may be whether dentures will fit properly and be comfortable to wear. Some people worry about dentures falling out or feeling loose, which can cause discomfort or embarrassment.

If you are considering dentures, it’s a good decision to weigh the benefits and possible drawbacks carefully. For example, dentures can restore your ability to chew and speak, and improve your appearance and self-confidence. However, you want to inform yourself thoroughly about pricing first. How to go about ongoing dentures maintenance, and the time it might take to adjust to wearing dentures?

When deciding whether dentures are right for you, it’s essential to consider your personal circumstances and preferences. Factors such as your age, overall health, and the number and location of missing teeth can all impact the suitability of dentures as a solution.

Since everyone is unique and there’s no One Fits All answer to the questions you might have, consult with a professional denturist to determine the best course of action for your specific individual needs. Make informed decisions only. Never take actions based upon just assumptions.

At Swiss Denture Clinic, it’s all about your options, your choices and your decisions

The 6 Most Frequently Asked Questions When People Consider Dentures in Calgary

1. What is the average cost of dentures and does dental insurance cover it?

The cost of dentures can vary significantly depending on a number of factors, such as the type of dentures, the materials used, your oral health condition, and even the location and experience of the denturist.

The type of dentures you need will impact the overall cost probably the most. Conventional dentures are typically less expensive than implant-supported dentures, which require additional procedures and materials. The materials used to make the dentures can also impact the cost. High-quality, durable materials like porcelain and composite resins may be more expensive than less durable options like acrylic or resin.

It is important to note that the cost of a full set of dentures may not include additional services or procedures, such as tooth extractions or adjustments to the dentures. These additional services can add to the overall cost of treatment.

Some dental insurance plans may cover a portion of the cost of complete dentures, but the extent of coverage can vary widely depending on the plan. It is important to check with your local dental insurance provider to determine what is covered and what out-of-pocket costs you may incur.

This might not be the answer you expect or like, but there is simply no ‘One fits all’ solution or pricing for dentures. The individual factors of denture treatment can vary widely depending on a number of factors, and we do not want to provide you with inaccurate information. It is important to consult with an experienced denturist like Jennifer Auld at Swiss Denture in Calgary to determine the best treatment options for your needs and budget.

2. What to expect when you are new to dentures?

new dentures calgary ab swiss denture It is common for people to experience some discomfort and soreness when they first start wearing dentures. This is because dentures are a foreign object in the mouth and can put pressure on the gums and other oral tissues.

Here are some things that new denture wearers can expect during the adjustment period:
  1. Discomfort and soreness: New dentures can cause sore spots and discomfort, especially in the first few days or weeks of use. This is normal, and the discomfort should gradually subside as the mouth gets used to the dentures.
  2. Difficulty eating and speaking: It may take some time to adjust to eating and speaking with dentures. Soft foods are recommended during the adjustment period, and speech exercises can help improve the clarity of speech.
  3. Increased saliva production: Some people may experience increased saliva production when first wearing dentures. This should lessen as the mouth gets used to the dentures.
  4. Slippage and looseness: Initially, the dentures may feel loose and may slip out of place. This is normal, and adjustments can be made to improve the fit and stability of the dentures.
  5. Changes in taste: Some people may experience changes in taste when wearing dentures. This is because the dentures cover the palate, which can affect the ability to taste food.

It is important for new denture wearers to follow their denturist’s instructions for the care and use of the dentures. Regular adjustments may be necessary as the mouth and gums change over time. Proper cleaning and maintenance of the dentures can also help prevent discomfort and ensure the dentures last as long as possible.

It is also important to remember that it can take several weeks or months to fully adjust to wearing dentures. Patience and persistence are key to successfully adapting to this new oral appliance.

3. Will my dentures look fake or unnatural?

real dentures calgary ab swiss dentureMany people may have concerns about the appearance of dentures, especially if they are worried about them looking fake or unnatural. However, at Swiss Denture in Calgary, modern denture materials and techniques have come a long way in recent years, and it is absolutely possible to create dentures that look natural and blend in with the rest of the mouth.

Here are some factors that can affect the appearance of dentures:

  1. Colour: The colour of the denture teeth can be matched to the natural shade of the patient’s teeth, ensuring that the dentures look as natural as possible.
  2. Shape: The shape of the denture teeth can be customized to fit the patient’s mouth and facial structure, creating a more natural appearance.
  3. Fit: A well-fitting denture will not only be more comfortable but will also look more natural. A good fit can prevent slippage and movement, which can make the dentures more noticeable.
  4. Gum line: The gum line of the denture can also be customized to match the patient’s natural gum line, further improving the appearance of the dentures.
  5. Quality of materials: High-quality denture materials, such as porcelain or acrylic, can provide a more natural appearance and can be matched to the color and texture of the natural teeth.
Swiss Denture Denturist Jennifer Auld:
“It is important to work with a qualified and experienced denture provider like Swiss Denture in Calgary to ensure that your dentures are designed and fitted to meet your unique needs and appearance goals. By working closely together and taking the time to find the right fit and appearance, you will enjoy comfortable, natural-looking dentures that can help restore your confidence and quality of life.”

4. Will my dentures function as well as natural teeth?

natural looking teeth dentures calgary ab swiss dentureToday’s quality dentures can function very well for many people, but there are some factors that can impact their effectiveness. The fit of the dentures is one of the most important considerations. Well-fitting dentures can help you speak and eat more easily, while poorly fitting dentures can cause discomfort and difficulty with everyday activities.

Eating with dentures
Most dentures may require some adjustment to your diet and eating habits. Initially, you may find it difficult to eat certain foods or to chew as effectively as you did with natural teeth. However, with practice and time, most people are able to adapt to their dentures and eat a wide variety of foods.
Speaking with dentures
This may also require some practice. You may find that certain sounds or words are more difficult to pronounce at first, but with time and practice, you can overcome this. It can be helpful to practice speaking out loud and reading aloud to help your mouth get used to the new dentures.

It is worth noting that there may be some individual differences in how well dentures function and how easily people adjust to them. At Swiss Denture, we can provide guidance on caring for your dentures, adjusting to their use, and addressing any issues that may arise.

5. How do I care for my dentures, and will it be time-consuming?

dentures care cleaning calgary ab swiss dentureCaring for your dentures is important to keep them clean and in good condition, and it doesn’t have to be too time-consuming.

Here are some general tips for denture care:

  1. Remove and rinse dentures after eating: After eating, remove your dentures and rinse them thoroughly to remove any food particles that may be stuck on them.
  2. Brush dentures daily: Brush your dentures at least once a day using a soft-bristled brush and mild soap or denture cleaner. Avoid using regular toothpaste, which can be too abrasive for dentures.
  3. Soak dentures overnight: Soak your dentures in a denture cleanser solution or water overnight to keep them moist and clean.
  4. Brush your gums, tongue, and palate: Use a soft-bristled brush to clean your gums, tongue, and palate every day before you put your dentures in.
  5. Handle with care: When handling your dentures, be gentle and avoid dropping them or bending the clasps or plastic.
  6. Visit your dentist regularly: Regular dental checkups can help ensure your dentures fit properly and your oral health is in good condition.
Overall, taking care of dentures does require some effort, but it doesn’t have to be too time-consumingWith regular care and maintenance, your dentures can last for many years and provide you with a comfortable and functional smile.

6. How will I feel with dentures?

feel good dentures calgary ab swiss dentureThe impact of dentures on a person’s self-consciousness and confidence can vary from individual to individual. Some people may feel self-conscious about wearing dentures at first, especially if they are new to them or if they feel that the dentures are noticeable or ill-fitting. However, for many people, dentures can ultimately boost their confidence and improve their quality of life.

Dentures can help restore the appearance of your smile and face, which can have a positive impact on your self-image and self-esteem. If you have been living with missing teeth or other oral health issues, the improvements that dentures can bring can help you feel more comfortable and confident in social situations.

It’s worth noting that it may take some time to adjust to wearing dentures, both physically and emotionally. You may feel more self-conscious at first, but with time and practice, most people are able to adjust to their new teeth and feel more comfortable and confident in them. Additionally, working with a skilled and experienced denturist like Swiss Denture in Calgary can help ensure that your dentures fit well and look natural, which can also help you feel more at ease.

Ultimately, the impact of dentures on your self-consciousness and confidence will depend on your individual experiences and how you perceive your new teeth. The Do’s and Don’ts of Daily Denture Care

About 19% of the population wears either partial or complete dentures. If you’re new to dentures, then you need to know a bit about denture care. Learning how to clean dentures regularly is the key to denture longevity. This post will tell you the do’s and don’ts of daily denture care. The better care you take of your dentures, the longer they’ll last and the better your oral health will be. Keep reading and learn what to do and what not to do.

Do Get a Denture Toothbrush

A regular soft-bristled toothbrush is usually safe to use on your dentures, but you can take it a step further and get a toothbrush designed for dentures. The bristles of a denture toothbrush are designed to accommodate your specific dentures. They’re also larger than your average toothbrush and have two different brush heads.

Do Clean Your Mouth After Removal

Learning how to clean dentures is important, but so is learning how to clean your mouth after your dentures are out. Maintaining good oral health is brushing your gums, tongue, cheeks, and roof of your mouth. You can use a soft toothbrush and mouthwash to eliminate any lingering food or bacteria in your mouth. If you’ve got a partial denture, brush your remaining teeth as usual.

Do Rinse Your Dentures

You should never give your dentures a thorough cleaning while they’re in your mouth. Nor should you put the dentures back in your mouth without giving them a good rinse. Denture cleaners are made of powerful chemicals, so you can get really sick if you swallow them.

Don’t Skip Checkups

Proper denture care involves showing up to your regular checkups. For those in the Calgary area, Swiss Denture Clinic is your one-stop shop for denture fittings and repairs. We can help you maintain your dentures to last a long time. Should you need any repairs or adjustments, call us, and we can get your dentures sorted out in no time.

Don’t Let Your Dentures Dry Out

Never take your dentures out and leave them on the side table or bathroom counter. When they dry out, there’s a good chance that they could warp. When you remove them, put them in a denture cleaning solution, or at the very least, some warm water.

Don’t Leave Your Dentures In Overnight

Once you adjust to your dentures, you should take them out before bed every night. The only situation that you should leave them in during sleep is under your dentist’s direction.

Taking Denture Care SeriouslyNow that you understand denture care’s do’s and don’ts, you can ensure your false teeth last a long time. If you’re looking for affordable dentures in Calgary, it’s time to make an appointment at the Swiss Denture Clinic. We handle everything from denture relines to repairs and implants. We’ll be there for you whatever help you need with your dentures.

What Are the Different Types of Dentures and How Can You Choose Them?

Dentures act as a prosthesis for missing teeth and offer many benefits, including improved speech, self-confidence, and eating capabilities. They can also protect any remaining teeth and help prevent facial sagging.

There are several different types of dentures, and in this blog post, we will share practical information that can help you choose the most suitable option. If you are interested in getting dentures in Calgary, your premier choice is Swiss Denture Clinic. Let’s get started.

Complete Dentures in Calgary

There are a number of reasons why a person may lose all of their teeth, including infection, injury, periodontitis, or other medical conditions. In these cases, complete dentures are an excellent option. According to the Canadian Dental Association, approximately 6.4% of Canadians are edentulous, which means they do not have any remaining teeth.

The good news is that this figure has reduced from close to 24% over the past 40 years. The artificial teeth are attached to a plate that sits against the gums. These dentures are typically made from acrylic and are shaped to the person’s jaw. They are secured in place using a dental adhesive. These dentures replace missing teeth on either or both the upper or low arch.

Partial Dentures in Calgary

If the person still has some healthy teeth, partial dentures are a good option. These dentures are typically clipped around healthy teeth. These clips are often made in tooth-coloured enamel, given that they may be visible when the person is talking. Depending on the patient’s needs, partial dentures may be used either temporarily or long-term. In some cases, implant-supported partial dentures can give extra support to an unstable lower jaw prosthesis.

Immediate Dentures in Calgary

Also known as temporary dentures, they are used to bridge the gap between the extraction of teeth and the arrival of permanent dentures. They are also helpful in protecting the gum tissue while the mouth continues healing after tooth extraction. Benefits of immediate dentures include:

  • Immediately fill gaps in the mouth after an extraction
  • Protect the gums during the healing process
  • Help to minimize gum bleeding
  • Patients receive them on the same day as extraction

They are typically worn for between 4 and 6 months until the permanent dentures arrive.

Implant Dentures in Calgary

Not every patient is a fan of traditional dentures, given how they can lose above the lower gums. For these people, implant dentures are a great option since they anchor the denture to the gums. Implant dentures can be either removable or fixed, which fits various needs and preferences.

Your First Denture Care Program

Removal of your natural teeth is an important change in your life and is the beginning of a process of healing and adaptation to something new. We are here to guide you through the process and provide the support that you need for a successful recovery. We are also here to coach you through the process of adaptation to eating, speaking, and living with dentures for the first time.

During your first six months with dentures, there will be considerable changes in both the bone and oral tissues, and it will take time and patience for you to adapt to the change and to receive the follow-up care that you need. Through the My First Denture program, bone loss is minimized through the use of an immediate denture. An immediate denture (sometimes called a surgical denture) is inserted immediately after your natural teeth are removed, so there is no time where you have to live without teeth.

To maintain optimum comfort (included in the fee), soft temporary liners are placed in the denture whenever you need them for up to 6 months. During that time, we also provide any necessary adjustments to the bite to facilitate your best outcome. After the healing process is complete, we remove all temporary material and do a permanent reline (not included in the fee).

Missing teeth can cause many problems including eating difficulties, speech issues and cosmetic concerns. This can take a toll on your confidence level, but there’s something you can do about it: you can consider a partial denture.

is dedicated to providing complete satisfaction to our patients. Here at Swiss Denture Clinic, we have over 40 years of experience, and our highly-qualified staff has worked with patients with different degrees of gum health and jaw shapes.

In this blog post, we shed light on certain facts about partial dentures that you need to know.

What Are Dentures?

When you lose a tooth dentures are removable artificial teeth which are made to fill the gap. They can be full dentures, for those who have lost all of their natural teeth, or partial dentures for those who are missing only some of their natural teeth.

Full dentures
, also known as complete dentures, are fabricated when a patient loses all of the natural teeth on either their upper or lower jaw.  The appliance will consist of a plastic base that rests on the gums and a full set of artificial teeth. Full dentures are removable for cleaning purposes and should be removed overnight.

Partial dentures
restore your smile when only a few teeth are missing. These appliances are usually supported by neighbouring teeth and allowing you to smile, speak and chew properly. The appliance can either be made with a metal framework or a plastic base for supporting teeth. Plastic partial dentures have generally been used for temporary or emergency purposes such as enabling the bone and gum to heal before a definitive restorative solution is applied.

If you are missing a certain number of your teeth, partial dentures may be the right treatment option for you.
How Are Partial Dentures Made?

The first step in making a partial denture is a dental exam. Your Denturist will check for any problems that might interfere with your future success in wearing a partial, and may potentially suggest other dental work which needs to be completed by your dentist prior to fabrication of the partial denture.

Your Denturist then takes impressions and designs the support structure for the partial.  The individual teeth are set individually, by hand and the you will return to the office for an appointment to approve them. After any final changes are made, the partial dentures will be finished and then you will return to the office to have them fitted in your mouth.  Over the next few months, it’s normal to expect to return for adjustments and fittings.
How Should You Care for Partial Dentures?

It is important for you to care about your partial dentures in order to keep them in prime condition. Some major steps include:

Consistent cleaning
 – You must regularly brush them with a soft-bristle toothbrush and denture paste. Ensure to not use regular toothpaste as it is too abrasive and could result in damage.

Frequent checkups
 – The structure of your mouth will keep on changing as you age. This makes it necessary to see your Denturist to evaluate whether or not your dentures need to be updated.

Facts to Know About Dental Implant Recovery Process

A dental implant refers to a titanium post that is surgically positioned into the jawbone when a natural tooth is lost. When healing is complete, the implant functions like a tooth-root and supports the new crown or bridge.  At Swiss Denture Clinic, our team looks forward to providing you with the best possible denture solutions.

Recovery from dental implant surgery varies from patient to patient depending on: medical history, the number of teeth affected and the patient’s compliance with the dentist’s recommendations during the recovery process. People with healthy gums and strong bones are ideal candidates for dental implants, but where thin or soft bones exist, a bone graft and/or sinus lift can help.

When grafting is involved, the healing process may be extended, but for most dental implant placements, there is minor postoperative discomfort because appropriate pain medications and antibiotics are prescribed. Quality of life is not drastically affected during the healing period, but patients can expect swelling and/or bruising and will need to eat a soft diet for a certain period of time.

You should be able to return to your normal diet after 7 to 10 days.  In cases where bone or soft-tissue grafting has taken place, swelling may be more pronounced which can extend the recovery period quite significantly.

Tips for Speedy Recovery

Lifestyle choices during the healing-period play a huge role in deciding how soon you get well. For instance, smokers should avoid smoking for at least 1 week after oral surgery.  Nicotine increases the chance of gum infection and the action of smoking can dislodge blood clots.

Hard, chewy or crunchy foods are to be strictly avoided immediately after dental implant surgery. For the first 24 to 48 hours your dentist may recommend ice and may suggest that you consume only cool foods/drinks.  This period may be extended if grafting has taken place. Always follow your dentist’s instructions and call the office if you have questions.

Eat Well! Avoid skipping meals and keep taking liquids at regular intervals. Fruit-smoothies are an excellent choice to support recovery, but avoid fruits with small seeds like strawberries.  You can add protein supplements as they will help build tissues.

If you are diabetic, take special care to keep your blood sugar level in control. Increased glucose levels can delay your healing process and increase the risk of infection.

Avoid drinking from straws as the sucking action can dislodge the blood clot that forms after surgery. If this happens, you may feel extreme pain and may need to visit your dentist again.

Avoid alcohol which affects bone metabolism, reduces bone density and interferes with direct bone-to-implant contact. The chances of implant failure increase with the intake of alcohol.

Take antibiotics as prescribed and never miss a dose. Keep an eye on the healing area for redness, pus or other signs of infection.

Inadequate oral hygiene is another major cause of implant failure. Follow your dentist’s instructions regarding when you can begin rinsing your mouth and or brushing after surgery.  Always remember to be gentle while cleaning around the surgical area.

Physical activity should be avoided in the days following surgery as rigorous physical movements can cause throbbing or bleeding. Also remember that your nutrition will likely be compromised and your body may feel a little weak. Focus on relaxation and recovery so you can get back to your workouts when you are feeling better.

Once the initial healing occurs, you will feel comfortable while the implants continue to integrate with the bone. Regular check-ups with your dentist will help in monitoring your healing process.

Fixed or Removable Implant Dentures – Which Is Right for Me?

Whether you opt for fixed or removable implant dentures, with Swiss Denture Clinic you are benefiting from the most advanced denture technology available. However, there are some important differences between the two types of implant dentures that are worth taking into account. But first, it’s useful to understand what exactly implant dentures are and how they differ from conventional dentures.

What are Implant Dentures?

Whereas conventional dentures rest on the gums directly and they are retained through suction, implant dentures (also called implant-supported dentures) attach to small, cylindrical metal implants (typically four or more) that have been fixed into the jaw. Implant dentures improve on conventional dentures in two important ways:

  • Implant dentures stay firmly in place, and therefore, essentially feel and function more like natural teeth. Conventional dentures, on the other hand, are apt to slide and shift, making eating and speaking a challenge.
  • Because the implants are anchored firmly to the living bone tissue, wearing implant dentures stimulates and strengthens the jawbone. Conversely, wearing conventional dentures inevitably leads to bone resorption, and eventually the bone tissue in the jaw deteriorates.

Fixed vs. Removable Implant Dentures

The fundamental difference between fixed and removable implant dentures is that the former can’t be removed, save by a dental professional, while the latter can be easily removed by the wearer (they’re equipped with fasteners). When determining which implant denture type is right for you, here are a few factors to consider:

  • Cleaning: Fixed implant dentures are cleaned almost like natural teeth (including regular visits to a hygienist). Removable implant dentures are removed from the mouth for cleaning. Some people, especially persons with limited dexterity, find this to be handier.
  • Comfort: Wearing fixed implant dentures won’t cause denture sores to develop. Wearing removable implant dentures, however, sometimes does result in sores. Moreover, removable implant dentures generally have a plastic part that covers the palate, which some might find bothersome.
  • Longevity: Both implant denture types last a long time, but removable implant dentures require periodic adjustment by a dental professional.

And, finally, whether one opts for fixed or removable implant dentures may simply come down to personal preference. Often, when a person is moving from a conventional denture to an implant denture, they choose the removable type as they’ve become used to this kind of denture. And when they’ve never had dentures before, conversely, they choose fixed implant dentures, as these are most similar to natural teeth.

Of course, getting dentures is a big decision, and you want to make sure you have all the facts beforehand. Make sure you talk with a denturist about which denture option would be most suitable for you.
